Digital pet record: everything about your pet in one place

A digital pet record, often called a pet health record, brings your pet's vaccinations, treatments, medication, reports and appointments together in one app. Learn what belongs in it, how it beats paper and what to look for when choosing an app.

What is a digital pet record?

A digital pet record (also called a pet health record) is the electronic collection of all important information about your pet. Instead of searching folders, drawers and chats for the vaccination pass, invoices, reports and notes, you have everything in one app on your phone.

Unlike the patient file at your vet practice, the digital pet record belongs to you as the owner. You decide who can see it.

What belongs in a pet record?

  • Basic data: name, species, breed, date of birth, photo, microchip number
  • Vaccinations and deworming: date, vaccine, next booster
  • Treatments and therapies: diagnoses, medication, dosage, duration
  • Weight: history over months and years
  • Allergies and special notes: intolerances, pre-existing conditions, emergency notes
  • Documents: reports, lab results, X-rays, invoices
  • Insurance: pet health insurance policy and documents
  • Contacts: vets, animal clinic, pet sitters
  • Nutrition: food, amounts, intolerances

Advantages over paper

  • Always with you: at the vet, when travelling or in an emergency, offline if needed
  • Reminders: for vaccinations, deworming and medication
  • Sharing: with your vet, family or pet sitter without sending copies
  • History: see weight, treatments and costs over time
  • Nothing lost: photos of documents don't get lost with the paper

Checklist: what to look for in a pet record app

  1. Privacy: Who can see your data? Can you grant and revoke access selectively?
  2. Several pets: Can you manage several pet profiles in one app?
  3. Data entry: Do you have to type everything, or can the app read the vaccination pass from a photo?
  4. Reminders and calendar: Are appointments synced with your device calendar?
  5. Offline access: Is key data available without a connection?
  6. Sharing: Can you include family or sitters, with permissions and time limits?
  7. Cost: Is the app free or do you need a subscription?

How the digital pet record works in YourPetDiary

In YourPetDiary you create a profile for each pet and collect vaccinations, treatments, therapies, weight history, documents, costs and insurance papers. You can photograph the vaccination pass and the vaccinations are pre-filled. Appointments can be synced with your calendar, and key data is available offline.

You can grant your vet practice access to the profile. Family and pet sitters join via Care Packs, with roles and time limits. Learn more on the digital health record page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a digital pet record the same as the EU pet passport?

No. The EU pet passport is an official travel document. The digital pet record is your personal overview and does not replace it.

Is a pet health record the same as a pet record?

Yes. Pet record, pet health record and digital pet file usually mean the same thing: a digital collection of all your pet's health data.

Which pets is a digital pet record suitable for?

Dogs, cats and all other pets. In YourPetDiary you can manage several pets in one app.

How much does a digital pet record cost?

That depends on the app. YourPetDiary is free on the App Store and Google Play.

Can my vet see the pet record?

In YourPetDiary only if you explicitly grant the practice access to the pet profile.
